Reflected Ceiling Plan guide to drafting

Posted: January 18, 2020

A reflected ceiling plan (RCP), is a type of architectural drawing that shows you the layout of a ceiling as viewed from above. In fact, the RCP is provides you a detailed illustration of the ceiling design. As well as, help coordinate the installation of ceiling elements such as lighting fixtures, HVAC ductwork and sprinklers.

What is a reflected ceiling plan, specifically?

1. The RCP is a foundation drawing

Reflected ceiling plans are created by architects, engineers, or contractors and therefore, are an important part of the construction process. RCPs will help you order the installation of ceiling elements with other building systems, such as electrical and plumbing. Additionally, it ensures the layout of your entire floor plan. Above all, it helps vendors know where and how certain fixtures will be placed.

2. The RCP is not a mirror image of your floor plan

Reflected ceiling plans are separate drawings that avoid detail jamming. Most importantly, the RCP will show you the placement of all ceiling elements, including lights, vents, diffusers, sprinklers, and other objects. The plan also shows the location of any drop ceilings, soffits, or other ceiling features that may affect the overall design. In turn, they help you verify you are following local building codes and regulations and to ensure that the ceiling design meets the needs of the building residents.

3. The RCP gives electricians, builders and architects an idea of the materials

Lastly, the ceiling material must be able to support objects that will be suspended from it. However, some people may find it difficult to read reflected ceiling plans. Here are some helpful tips.

How to read a reflected ceiling plan:

  1. Suspend yourself a few feet above the ceiling
  2. Imagine being able to see through the ceiling
  3. Visualize the ceiling over the floor
  4. A RCP is not a typical plan
  5. Observe the relationship of light fixtures, ceiling elements and furniture
