Creating the perfect floor plan can be more difficult than most people realize. They need to assist the design process. Meaning, they are the basis for decisions that are made regarding furniture layouts and circulation, etc. Lastly, you must support discussions with tradesmen/electricians, etc.
Here are five tips for the perfect floor plan design:
- Identify the correct plan for the project: Electricians will require highly detailed floor plans from which to work. A half complete, inaccurate rendition will not serve them in any way. For electricians you may wish to add color and texture to your electrical plan. Color can indicate the various outlets and other components. Certainly, when producing a technical floor plan such as would be viewed by electricians, include borders, titles, etc.
- Be as accurate as possible when measuring spaces: Floor plans are only good if the measurements are correct. Hence, you must be exact in this task. When measuring existing spaces, lay your measuring tape flat on the floor and measure room dimensions in several places. Lastly, double check your measurement at all points and don’t assume your walls are parallel.
- Consider how the space will be used: For example, if you are laying out an office space, leave enough room in front of the filing cabinet so that they can be fully extended. Also, allow for adequate working space at desks or cubicles. This distance should be at least 42 inches from the nearest wall.
- Don’t forget scale and proportion: Floor plans by their very definition are supposed to be accurate. However, you need to make sure the fixtures and furnishings depicted in your drawings reflect their true size.
- Make sure you create high resolution floor plan designs: If you need to export your floor plans, make sure that they are high resolution. For instance, PDFs are generally high quality documents.
